Brighton & Hove University of the Third Age
In this group we are tracing the history of European architecture from the Ancient Greeks and Romans, through Byzantine and Romanesque to the Gothic, Renaissance, Baroque and Rococo styles. The emphasis will then shift to England for the Neoclassicism of the Georgian era, and through Romanticism to the Gothic Revival, ending up at the 20th century.
So far we have reached the Gothic period. When we have completed the general chronological series, we shall look at individual topics, such as ‘The Rise of a Seaside Town – Brighton’ or at great buildings, such as Hagia Sophia and Chartres Cathedral.
