Literature
The course for 2009-10 will have two separate but complementary elements.
In the first half of the year we shall be looking at novels chosen to highlight ways by which different novelists evolve and make use of contrasting methods and structures to tell a story. We shall look in some detail at:
- Trollope Can You Forgive Her?
- Lawrence Women in Love
- Forster Passage to India
- Faulkner The Sound and the Fury
- Atwood Novel yet to be decided
In the second half of the year we shall be looking at what may be called “Varieties of Dramatic Experience”; and again, by studying several works in detail we shall note particularly how different dramatists devise and employ differing techniques to convey contrasting experiences. Plays to be studied will include:
- Shakespeare King Lear
- Stringberg The Father
- Brecht Mother Courage
- Stoppard Professional Foul
- Churchill Serious Money
